We are looking to appoint a qualified, highly motivated, experienced, and enthusiastic Specialist Sensory Teaching Assistant/Technician to join our supportive, hardworking and successful Sensory Team to start September 2024. The team is part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Schools and Families Specialist Services. We work with children and young people with a visual and or hearing loss and other SEND, their families and the staff who work with them in line with associated standards, within the Sensory Team.

You should have a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience of which at least 2 years should be working with children/young people with a range of SEN, preferably with some experience of working with those who are deaf and/or visually impaired. You should have an up to date and working knowledge of early child development and the national curriculum at the appropriate Key Stage, which could include the Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 5. You should have experience of collaborative work with a range of professionals and agencies. You should also have experience of producing specialist resources for children and young people with sensory impairment and other SEND. In addition, an ability to develop excellent working relationships with parents/carers and families. Ideally, you should have both or either a qualification in Braille or British Sign Language (Level 2) or be willing to undertake such training outside of the working day.

The main duties will include:

  • Modifying and adapting resources for schools and settings.
  • Delivering staff training on how to adapt/ modify resources.
  • Setting up of VI/HI specialist equipment and delivering training on the use of equipment to both staff and pupils.
  • Supporting pupils in learning Braille, Touch Typing and how to use their assistive technology such as iPads.
  • Supporting pupils in learning Sign Supported English (SSE) and British Sign Language (BSL).
  • Assisting the educational audiologist and teachers for the deaf to maintain and monitor stock, repair equipment, input data on spreadsheet and support the management of equipment in schools.

The base and district will be determined upon the appointment of the successful applicant. However, as the Sensory team is a county wide provision, you will also be required to work in other areas of the County in accordance with Service need.

Please note this post requires Enhanced DBS clearance and the successful candidate will not be permitted to commence work without this. The post also carries an Authorised Car User Allowance so the successful applicant must hold a full driving licence and have daily access to a vehicle (a taxi service will be provided where disability precludes this).
