We have an opportunity for someone to join our wonderful school by becoming our new Caretaker. We are seeking a conscientious and reliable individual who will undertake caretaking duties and become an integral part of our school community. This is a key role as you will be ensuring the safety, security, cleanliness and maintenance of our school on a daily basis. You will be responsible for supervising the cleaning staff, ensuring cleaning standards are achieved and will report to the School Business Manager with whom you will have a close working relationship.

About the role

This role is all year round meaning some school holiday working. You would be working a ‘Split-Shift’ during a 37 hour working week. 6:00am – 9:30am/ 2:30pm – 6:30pm (Monday to Thursday) 6:00am – 9:00am/ 2:30pm – 6:30pm (Friday). Flexibility is key as there will be some out-of-hours opening and closing of the school, to support the schools lettings operations for which additional earnings can be made. You would also be the first responder to any fire or intruder alarms.

Available with this position is a Caretaker House for those applicants wishing to take advantage. This is a well-appointed three bedroom property with front and rear gardens, contained within the main school site. Tenants would be required to pay a monthly rental and all other utility and local authority charges.

Whilst previous experience of working in a similar role is desirable we are open to applications from those with transferable skills as training can be provided. This is a physical role so a good level of fitness and mobility is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervision of the cleaning staff and allocation of their work duties
  • Opening up/ Locking up the school as the main Key Holder
  • First responder to any alarm call-outs and liaison with the monitoring centre and Police
  • Cleaning duties to designated areas (approx. 10 hours per week)
  • Monitoring and recording the condition of Asbestos
  • Other inspections and record keeping of the premises and equipment
  • Basic maintenance and repairs as required
  • Attend to the heating and ensure that required temperatures are maintained
  • Attend to the heating at weekends when necessary (e.g. Winter months)
  • Ensure exterior hard surfaces are kept clean and clear
  • In winter months; salting and de-icing of pathways and playground /moving snow
  • Emptying of external litter bins
  • To deal with contractors and completion of required SR77 Paperwork
  • Preparation of rooms for lettings and other users of the buildings
  • To organise replenishment of consumables and ensure adequate stocks of supplies
  • Carry out porterage duties as and when required
  • Attend any required training associated with the role (e.g. Asbestos Awareness, IOSH) 

Desirable knowledge and skills required

  • Experience in delivering caretaking or similar services
  • Basic Tradesman skills
  • Experience of supervising staff and allocating work
  • Ability to work well with other members of a team
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Basic computer literacy (e.g. email)
