Are you looking for a flexible, interesting and rewarding part-time role that can fit well around existing work and personal commitments and that provides you with an opportunity to play an important part in supporting school governing bodies in meeting their responsibilities to improve educational opportunities of children?

The demand for our clerking services for governing bodies both within and outside of Nottinghamshire remains very high. We are therefore seeking to recruit suitably experienced people to act as Clerk to the Governing Bodies of a number of schools and academies. We are looking for applications from all areas of the county to join our dedicated and supportive team.

The Clerk to Governors is a professional role and you will be required to advise the school governing body on a range of issues including procedural, legal, and educational matters. You will also be expected to take minutes of the meeting and undertake other administrative functions. Whilst full training will be provided, you will need an understanding of education issues, as well as experience of minute taking for formal meetings, good communication skills and a sense of humour!

We will provide you with:

  • A comprehensive induction with opportunities to shadow experienced Clerks.
  • Ongoing support via 1-2-1 meetings, informal group meetings (usually held virtually), email and telephone advice from an experienced management team as well as half - termly briefing sessions.
  • Personal, portable IT equipment to help you work efficiently.
  • On-going personal development.

You will be allocated regular responsibility for several schools and will be required to attend agreed governing body meetings during term time. The meetings are largely in the early evening, usually after 4:00pm but can occasionally take place during the daytime. Usually, the meetings are held in school, and you would be expected to attend in person, but they also take place on virtual platforms. You will be expected to undertake preparation and follow up work for each meeting and this work is carried out remotely.

Clerks are paid a set 8.5 hours per governing body meeting. You will be working towards clerking approximately 10 meetings per term, built up gradually as your confidence grows with support from the team.

There are also regular opportunities for work to cover absence or additional meetings and, for staff who are interested, training and professional development for more specialist work on exclusions or complaints.

A high standard of written English, good communication, interpersonal skills, IT proficiency (including word processing, emails, uploading and downloading information from websites and attending virtual meetings) and an understanding of educational issues are essential requirements.

Appointment to this post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Disabled applicants who meet the essential shortlisting requirements will be guaranteed an interview. A job share scheme is available for all full-time posts: both permanent and temporary, unless otherwise stated. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and we expect all staff to share this commitment and undergo appropriate checks.
