Please note: if you are unqualified at the time of appointment you will be paid at Grade 3 £18.795 - £19,554 per annum (pro rata). The advertised salary is for a qualified appointment at Grade 4.

Salary:Qualified - Grade 4 Scale Points 19-23     Unqualified – Grade 3 Scale Points 14 - 18

Contracted Hours: 08:45 to 16:15 on Mondays, 08:45 to 16:15 on Thursdays and 08:45 to 15:30 on Fridays

School holidays apply but are taken at different intervals to mainstream schools. Hours and holiday dates are non-negotiable due to the needs of the centre. Please note that relief work on non-employed days may be possible and the number of permanent days on offer may increase. Current days of working are Monday, Thursday and Friday but these are subject to change. School holidays apply but may be at slightly different times to mainstream schools.

Clayfields House is a Secure Children’s Home run by Nottinghamshire County Council. We care for up to 20 young people between 10 and 18 years who come to us from all over England and Wales. Young people are placed with us either on Youth Justice grounds for criminal matters or for welfare reasons because they are seriously unsafe in the community. Nearly always, our young people have had a very difficult care history and lots of traumatic experiences. We provide full time secure care, education, risk reduction programmes and physical and mental health services on site. We help these very vulnerable but also very complex and challenging young people turn their lives around. The work isn’t easy. Our staff group are very dedicated and skilled, they need to be very resilient to cope with the day to day challenges these young people present. The personal rewards for staff are great. There really is nothing like knowing that you are part of helping some of the most complex young people in the country achieve positive change in their lives against all the odds.

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant to join our Education Department which has been rated as Outstanding or Good by Ofsted for over a decade. You will be joining a committed and highly skilled wider multi-disciplinary team in the centre. We are especially keen to hear from candidates who feel confident supporting pupils in all curriculum subjects; from English to PE, Construction to Mathematics and beyond.  This post is immediately available because we want to recruit as soon as possible so that the successful candidate can benefit from our detailed staff induction.

Shortlisted candidates will need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills gained from general education to GCSE/O’ level/ Grade A-C (Grades 4 – 9) in English and Mathematics and / or Functional Skills Level 2.
  • Experience of working within the secondary phase environment at Key Stage 3 and 4 supporting pupils who present complex social, emotional and behavioural needs across the curriculum.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of special educational needs and additional needs including complex challenging behaviour, social emotional and behavioural difficulties, propensity for physical and verbal aggression, young people who sexually offend, self-harming and special educational needs including specific learning difficulties, dyspraxia, autism, ADHD, physical disabilities, conduct disorders, attachment difficulties, trauma and a wide variety of mental illnesses.
  • Knowledge and experience of supporting pupils experiencing severe literacy deficits, dyslexia and pupils requiring to be taught English as a second language.
  • Experience of regularly leading activities for groups of up to 4 young people that are self-planned and prepared independently of teachers.
  • Ability to use a wide range of behaviour management skills and negotiation and persuasive skills to motivate pupils with complex behavioural needs, encourage learning and maintain a safe environment.
  • The ability to support pupils across all curriculum subjects.
  • High expectations for pupil achievement.
  • Complete commitment to equality of opportunity and the elimination of discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
